IMVAMUNE™ selected as brand name for Bavarian Nordic’s MVA-BN smallpox vaccine; new vaccine manufacturing facility expected to be operational mid-2005.

Bavarian Nordic today announces that it has selected IMVAMUNE™ as the brand name for its third-generation MVA-BN smallpox vaccine. Bavarian Nordic has already supplied commercial quantities of its proprietary third-generation MVA-BN smallpox vaccine, and large-scale production is expected within a year. All future communications regarding the vaccine’s development and commercial activities will refer to the new brand name IMVAMUNE™.

Bavarian Nordic also confirms that re-construction of its Kvistgård manufacturing facility in cooperation with NNE A/S (Novo Nordisk Engineering) is moving forward as planned. Bavarian Nordic expects to begin commercial manufacture of IMVAMUNE™in mid-2005 at the Kvistgård facility, which will have a production capacity of up to 120 million vaccine doses per year.

Peter Wulff, President and CEO, commented, “If the RFP process in the USA develops as we expect, we are ready to begin production of 60 million doses of IMVAMUNE™ in the third-quarter of 2005. In addition to our own production capacity and in response to the substantial growing interest in our safe smallpox vaccine, we are in the process of establishing agreements with production partners in the USA and Far East.“
