Danish Prime Minister Fogh Rasmussen Visits Bavarian Nordic in the USA
Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen visited Bavarian Nordic’s subsidiary BN ImmunoTherapeutics Inc. in Mountain View, California on June 12, 2006. Bavarian Nordic’s Chairman of the Board, Asger Aamund, and President and CEO, Peter Wulff escorted the Prime Minister on his tour of the facility.
The visit was an opportunity for the Prime Minister to get a further understanding of how a modern Danish science-based company has adapted and grown with the challenges of globalisation. Bavarian Nordic’s core technological platform, based on a smallpox vaccine which has been shown safe in clinical trials, is also the foundation for the company’s development of new vaccines to prevent cancer. Placed in California, BN ImmunoTherapeutics combines Bavarian Nordic’s high-technology platform with one of the world’s best cancer research environments. This will contribute to promising results in the development of therapeutic vaccines against breast and prostate cancer.
During the visit, Anders Fogh Rasmussen noted Bavarian Nordic’s ability in the period of only 10 years, to evolve into one of Denmark’s leading science-based biotechnology companies. “Bavarian Nordic is in many ways a good example of how Denmark can create and take advantage of the many opportunities of globalisation. The smallpox vaccine, which is the foundation of Bavarian Nordic’s research, has proven to be very important. As a result, Bavarian Nordic is participating in the US Government’s tender process to supply a safe smallpox vaccine to the national emergency stockpile,” said Prime Minister Fogh Rasmussen.
Commenting on the visit, Asger Aamund noted his pleasure in the Prime Minister’s interest in Bavarian Nordic. ”It is of great importance to Danish companies that the Prime Minister has taken time to get a first-hand impression of Danish businesses operating internationally. The visit today by Prime Minister Fogh Rasmussen will raise awareness in Denmark of the international world of research as well as contribute to invaluable awareness of our new Danish subsidiary in the USA,” said Mr. Aamund.
